(Adams Center, NY – Sept, 15, 2011) On Aug. 23 at about 2:45 p.m. Robert R. Hutchinson, 83, of 21412 County Route 69, Rodman responded to the South Jefferson Central School District Office on Route 11, in the Town of Adams.

While Hutchinson was discussing Health Insurance issues with a District Office employee, he displayed a .22 caliber derringer style pistol in the palm of his hand.

Hutchinson did not hold the weapon in a threatening manner, but does not have School authorization to possess a weapon on School grounds. The incident was reported to the NYSP in Adams when Hutchinson left school grounds.

Several Long guns and hand guns were removed from Hutchinson’s residence by state police members later that evening. Hutchinson possessed the handguns legally with a valid NYS pistol permit, which will be reviewed administratively by the Jefferson County Court.

Hutchinson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon upon School grounds. He was processed at the Adams Satellite Office, issued an appearance ticket returnable in the Town of Adams Court and released.

An Order of Protection was also requested from the court on behalf of the District Office employee.

News from New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets

ALBANY, NY (08/10/2011)(readMedia)– Porterdale Farms in Adams Center, Jefferson County is the recipient of this year’s New York State Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) Award, announced New York State Agriculture Commissioner Darrel J. Aubertine. The Porters, along with the Jefferson County Soil and Water District, were honored during the Agricultural Leadership Luncheon ceremonies at Empire Farm Days in Seneca Falls.

“In business for more than seven decades, Porterdale Farms has had a longstanding commitment to being good stewards of the land and serving their community,” said Commissioner Aubertine. “As one of New York’s first large livestock farms to be regulated, this farm family was quick to adopt AEM into their business plan, allowing them to meet requirements and advance their conservation efforts, while helping their farm business thrive. Congratulations to the Porter family – you have rightfully earned this esteemed recognition.”

The AEM Award is presented annually to a farm family that practices sound agricultural stewardship by incorporating the AEM program into the operation of their farm business. The county Soil and Water Conservation District is also recognized for their important role in providing necessary technical assistance and resources.

Porterdale Farms was started in 1938 by Glenn and Ruth Porter with 198 acres and 35 cows. Today, David and Judy Porter with sons Greg and Ron and grandsons David, Jameson, Casey and Andrew, have 1700 mature cows and 1300 replacement heifers. They crop alfalfa, grass, hay, corn silage and corn grain on 4,500 acres.

State Soil and Water Conservation Committee Chairman George Proios said, “The Porter’s work with the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District to continually evaluate their conservation systems and improve upon their stewardship is truly commendable!”

The Porters and the Jefferson County Soil and Water District were selected for the 2011 AEM award because of their demonstrated commitment to managing, protecting and improving natural resources. Porterdale Farms built a new freestyle barn, eliminating the need for barnyard water management. They practice conservation tillage to prevent soil erosion, installed a silage leachate collection system to protect water quality and planted a tree, shrub and grass buffer to help protect Sandy Creek, which is the main source of drinking water for the Village of Adams.

Six other New York farms and Conservation Districts were recognized by the Commissioner for Honorable Mention. They are:

• Eight Mile Creek Farm of Westerlo, sponsored by Albany County Soil and Water Conservation District

• Aurora Ridge Dairy, LLC of Aurora, sponsored by Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District

• Downing Acres of Burke, sponsored by Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District

• Hillsprings Farm of Addison, sponsored by Steuben County Soil and Water Conservation District

• Jerry Dell Farms of Dryden, sponsored by Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District

• Heritage Hill Farms of Fort Ann, sponsored by Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District

With over 12,000 farms participating, New York’s AEM program serves as a national model of how a voluntary, incentive-based approach can successfully protect the State’s natural resources, while meeting the economic needs of our diverse agricultural community. The AEM partnership of local, state and federal agencies, environmental groups, businesses and farmers, provides the technical, educational and financial assistance to develop and implement sound farm conservation plans.

The 18th Annual Agricultural Environmental Management Award is jointly sponsored by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, American Agriculturist Magazine and the Empire State Potato Growers.

A moderated panel of North Country women will present their real-life triumphs over divorce, suicide, loss of income and the death of a child on Aug. 20. Seated from left are Grace Gardner, Kathy Sheley; standing from left are Jill Gratch, moderator Susan Richter, and Donna Sievers.

(Adams Center, NY – Aug. 2011) On Saturday, Aug. 20, Live More Ministries presents a panel of four women sharing their real-life experiences with divorce; suicide; the loss of self-esteem, income, homes and stability; and the death of a child. Organizers and speakers say this will be Live More’s most powerful program designed to inspire women with the message of hope and restoration that is found in Christ.

The free 10 a.m. to noon “God’s Hand in Life’s Losses” program at Honeyville Baptist Church on Route 177 east of Adams Center includes a courtesy breakfast served by the Honeyville Baptist Church Women from 9 to 9:45am.

“Everyone has burdens. This panel of women will share our personal testimonies of how the grace of God helped us through the storms of life. We believe you do not walk through your trials alone,” said Kathy Sheley, who lost her husband, her home and her livelihood to suicide 15 years ago in August.

Jill Gratch unexpectedly left her home one day without any preparation. She says, “My life was like a train coming off its tracks, but Jesus was there to encourage me to follow him in faith and I am now able to share my story to help other women facing the trial of a painful divorce.”

For Donna Sievers, her season of different kinds of losses was “a giant tidal wave of upheaval through which God kept saying ‘just hold on.’” Donna will encourage listeners to let God take control when you feel helpless in the face of the loss of a job, health, insurance or a home, or the death of loved ones.

Grace Gardner knows the heartache of the death of a child. Her teenage son Sam, one of five siblings, died in a car accident in 1994. She said, “Whatever struggle you are in, you can cry out and God will hear you. Out of tragedy can come a turning point for good.”

Susan Richter, who will moderate the panel, said, “I hope the women attending this Live More Ministries program will take home the message that they can let God lead them to work through whatever challenges or ‘giants’ they face without being overwhelmed.”

Live More Ministries, a Christian women’s ministry based in the southern Jefferson County, offers quarterly programs open to all women at various locations. Honeyville Baptist Church was founded in 1802 as the first church in the Adams area. The church is found at the corner of Route 177 and Fuller Road.

(Pierrepont Manor, NY – May 2011) On Saturday, May 7 Live More Ministries presents Patty Giles speaking on “Bridal Preparations: Living Ready for Christ’s Return” at Zion Episcopal Church in Pierrepont Manor, NY. The free 10am – 12noon program includes breakfast served by the Episcopal Church Women of Zion from 9-9:45am.

“It is on my heart to help people prepare for the return of Christ so they are not caught off guard. I believe this is crucial for people already in the church and for those who have not yet been born again,” Patty says. “This preparation is similar to a bride preparing for a wedding.”

Patty came to know the Lord after losing her only child, an 18-year-old son, to a car accident in 1988. Patty has ministered the Gospel on mission trips to Ethiopia, Ghana and India. She chairs the Mission Task Force, is a member of the worship team, and volunteers as an art and music teacher at Faith Fellowship Church in Watertown. Patty is married and lives in Adams Center, NY.

Live More Ministries is a Christian women’s ministry based in the southern Jefferson County area and offering quarterly programs at various locations. All women are welcome at May 7 program. Zion Episcopal Church, built in 1836, is part of a 5-building National Historic District. The church is easily found on NYS Route 193 east of Interstate Route 81 and west of US Route 11.
