“The boy’s name ‘Harry Patas’ (as in Harry Potter) came to me when I heard patas monkey. While not a native name, I thought it was a name the kids would remember and get a kick out of.”
Jabu (jaw-BOO)
Submitted by Katharine Richman, 27, of Alexandria, Va.

“This word means ‘gift’ in Zulu. I lived in South Africa for two years and while learning the Zulu I began to appreciate that all names given to Zulu children had an important meaning within the language. Jabu was the name of one of the people in my host family.”

Nakuru (Nuh-KOO-roo)

Patricia Leach, 51, of Parish

”Nakuru is a lake and national park in Kenya.”

Tafari (Tuh-FAR-ee)
Submitted by Angelina Sparano, 21, of Syracuse
“I choose Tafari for a boy because it is an African and means ‘he who inspires awe’ which I think the baby does, if you go see all the visitors looking at the patas monkeys!”

Those interested in voting can do so by e-mailing contest@rosamondgiffordzoo.org. The preferred names (one from the girl list AND one from the boy list) should be placed in the subject line of the e-mail. Limit one vote per e-mail address.

Facebook fans can place an additional vote through a poll on the zoo’s Facebook page. All votes must be received by 4 p.m. on October 3. The name that receives the highest number of votes will be the name by which the baby patas monkey will be known. The winner will receive a Patas Monkey Adopt an Animal package valued at $100.

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is one of just 15 American zoos to house patas monkeys. They are part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) – a collaborative effort between the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and zoos around the world to help ensure their survival.

(Town of Lysander, NY – Sept. 25, 2011) Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a car/tractor-trailer accident on Route 370 in the Town of Lysander, which sent one person to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

At approximately 1:46 a.m., Sheriff Deputies responded to a reported car/tractor-trailer collision on Route 370 just west of Tater Road near the Cayuga County line.

Deputies reported that a 2009 Toyota Corrolla, operated by a Paul A. Congleton (26) of English Settlement Road, Ogdensburg was traveling east bound on Route 370 when he crossed the center line into the west bound lane of traffic into the path of a 2003 Kenworth tractor-trailer being operated by John W. Reese (64) of Wiman Avenue, Syracuse.

The force of the tractor-trailer pushed Congleton’s vehicle back several hundred feet before both vehicles came to rest.

Rescue crews from the Plainville, Cato and Baldwinsville Fire Department also responded to the scene, where they had to extricate Congleton from his vehicle, due to the extensive damage caused by the collision.

Congleton was then transported by GBAC ambulance to University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition and is said to have internal injuries with several broken bones.

Reese was not injured but was evaluated at the scene by medical personnel.

Route 370 between Tater Road and the Cayuga County line is closed to all traffic while the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the scene. Fog weather conditions and alcohol appear to be a factor in Congleton crossing the center line prior to the collision.

Tickets are expected to be issued pending the outcome of the investigation.

(Town of VanBuren, NY – Aug. 12, 2011) Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that three people were hospitalized after a morning crash.

Yesterday morning (Aug. 12) at approximately 9 a.m., Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of Downer Street and West Sorrell Hill Road where a 2006 Chrysler 300, operated by Michele Walters, (50), of 35 Buccaneer Bend, collided with a 2000 Dodge Caravan, operated by Keith Conger, (52), of 48 East Oneida Street.

Witnesses stated that Conger was exiting Route 690 south at the Downer Street exit and drove through the stop sign at the end of the off ramp. Appearing as if he was suffering from a medical condition, Conger drove straight through the intersection where his minivan was t-boned by Walters who was traveling east on Downer Street.

Rescue crews from the Baldwinsville Fire Department responded to the scene and extricated Conger from the wreckage.

Conger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.

Walters, along with her son Mark Walters, (12), suffered minor injuries and were also transported by ambulance to University Hospital.

Members of the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team will continue the investigation.

(Baldwinsville, NY - July 28, 2011) State Police in Lysander arrested 53 year-old, Dr. Kenneth J. Corse II of 10 Massey Place in Baldwinsville for one count of Criminal sale of a Prescription of a Controlled Substance, a class ”C” felony and one count of Fraud and Deceit (Public Health law – 3397-1a1,11), an unclassified misdemeanor.

The NYS Department of Health – Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement requested State Police assistance with an investigation involving a medical doctor who had been selling multiple prescription scripts to be used to illegally obtain controlled substances.

The investigation had confirmed that Dr. Corse had unlawfully prescribed and presented scripts at a drug store in Baldwinsville between Sept. 1, 2010 and June 15, 2011. The scripts had been stolen from the Oneida Health Systems Inc. health care facility where the doctor had worked on a per diem basis. In each case, the scripts had made out to the doctor’s purported wife. State Police worked in conjunction with the NYS Dept of Health, which completed an extended investigation into the activities of this doctor over several months.

Dr. Corse was arraigned before Village of Baldwinsville Justice Huling and released on his own recognizance and is to reappear on Aug. 3, 2011 at 6 p.m.

(Baldwinsville, NY – July 26, 2011) This year’s Summer Reading Program in public libraries features the One World, Many Stories theme. Each Monday, the Baldwinsville Public Library has been offering outstanding programs to encourage kids to explore the many stories available everywhere.

A recent Monday afternoon found 12 teams of explorers, grades 2-5, tearing around the library in a library version of The Amazing Race. All teams competed in 10 activities based on the 10 categories of the Dewey Decimal System. As they completed each task, they got their Reading Program passports stamped. The team of Michelle Elsmore and Elizabeth Roberts was the first to arrive at the finish line. Prizes were awarded to all participants.
