(Cape Vincent, NY – Sept. 19, 2011) State Police in Alexandria Bay arrested Adam J. Faveret, 25, of 2140 Route 12E, Cape Vincent following an investigation of a man with a weapon outside a residence on 12E in Cape Vincent.

When Troopers arrived they found Faveret being restrained by a Clyde H. Garnsey who had intervened during a domestic dispute involving Faveret’s sister over Faveret drinking too much.

Investigation provided that Faveret was in the possession of a 22 caliber long rifle, two homemade knives and a small quantity of marihuana during the argument.

Faveret had driven to the residence resulting in the charge of Aggravated DWI with a BAC of .30.

He was arraigned before town of Clayton Justic Giles and remanded to the Jefferson County Public Safety Building with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

(Alexandria Bay, NY – Aug. 30, 2011)  State Police in Alexandria Bay are investigating a boating accident that occurred Aug. 30 at approximately 2:30 pm.

A swimmer was struck by a boat in the St. Lawrence River between the Islands of Grenfell and Murray in the Town of Clayton. The injured was taken to the main dock at Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island and transported to Samaritan Medical Center (SMC) by Tiers Ambulance.

The swimmer, Peter D. Hendley (age 66) of Hayward, CA, was pronounced deceased at SMC.

The operator of the boat was Thomas P. Kernan of Webster.

Investigation revealed Hendley was swimming from Grenell Island to Murray Island with a floating visual aid. Due to steady winds, white caps and the glare of the sun Kernan was unable to see Hendley and struck him with the boat. There are no criminal charges in this case.

The State Police were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the New York State Park Police.

(Brewerton, NY – Aug. 2011) Boater Ken Golub of Pittsford caught a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 1 ounce Aug. 20 to win $3,386 plus a $2,000 Ranger Cup bonus and a $1,000 Evinrude bonus in the Walmart BFL Northeast Division tournament on Oneida Lake in Brewerton.  Golub was flipping a half ounce green pumpkin jig around the entire lake.

Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy pick-up, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger 198VX.

(Town of Clayton, NY – Aug. 6, 2011) The New York State Police in Alexandria Bay investigated a one car serious personnel injury motor vehicle accident that occurred on Aug. 6 at approximately 1:22 a.m. on Reese Road in the Town of Clayton.

Stephen C. Olson, 22, of 36191 Reese Road was operating his 2000 Chevrolet S10 southbound on the Reese Road when he drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox and then a large tree.

He was extricated from his vehicle by Clayton Fire and Rescue and transported by TIERS ambulance to a Mercy Flight Helicopter who transported him to Upstate Medical Center.  He is currently being treated for serious head injuries and is listed in critical condition.

The investigation is continuing.

Gunsmiths, hunting guides, and collectors/sellers of military memorabilia answer questions and swap stories with show-goers. Along with the Wii games, there will be a face painter for the kids.

Doreen Garrett, creator of the Otis gun cleaning kits considered the industry standard for the US Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies, and sportsmen, is providing door prizes. Garrett was voted Business Person of the Year in Lewis County in 2010.

Dealers have ammunition, scopes, sights, binoculars, reloading equipment, gun cases, holsters, grips, cleaning kits, cartridges, shells, calibers, and gauges. In addition to selling, the dealers buy and trade goods.

NCIS checks are required for all firearm sales/purchases.

Show proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Clayton scholarship program. Nine scholarships totaling $4,000 are awarded annually to Thousands Islands and LaFargeville Central School graduates with exemplary academic achievement and community service.

This is the 34th Clayton-1000 Islands Gun & Sportsmen’s Show. The event is a Yellow Ribbon Event for military personnel and their families.

ALBANY, NY (July 8, 2011) Claire Puccia Parham, author of The St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project: An Oral History of the Greatest Construction Show on Earth will speak and sign copies of her book on Friday, July 29 at 3 p.m. at the Antique Boat Museum, 750 Mary Street, Clayton. The presentation is part of the museum’s 2011 Summer Lecture Series.

The Watertown native’s book, which took four years to complete, reveals the human side of the Seaway project in the words of 53 engineers, carpenters, laborers and their wives. It highlights the dangerous and brutal working conditions, the larger-than-life equipment, the construction dilemmas encountered, and was written as a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the project’s 22,000 workers.

Puccia Parham, a graduate of St. Lawrence University who currently teaches history at Siena College in Loudonville, NY published her first book From Great Wilderness to Seaway Towns: A Comparative History of Cornwall, Ontario and Massena, New York in 2004.

Puccia Parham gave two presentations at the Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center in Massena as part of the Seaway’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations in July 2009. She has spoken extensively about the book in the United States and Canada over the past two years.

(Sackets Harbor, NY – June 29, 2011) The Seaway Trail Discovery Center in Sackets Harbor  is now a Blue Star Museum.

The Blue Star Museums program is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts with Blue Star Families, an organization that raises awareness of the challenges and strengths of military family life- and more than 1,300 participating museums across America. The museums, nature center, historic and cultural sites provide free admission spouses and families of active military.

More than one million children in the U.S. have had at least one parent deployed. The program provides the free admission to affected families through Labor Day, Sept. 5, 2011.

“The Great Lakes Seaway Trail is pleased to partner with the National Endowment of the Arts in this initiative to provide military families with opportunities to learn about the byway region and the activities and destinations found only along our freshwater shoreline,” says Seaway Trail, Inc. President and CEO Teresa Mitchell. “By visiting the Seaway Trail Discovery Center which showcases the entire 518-mile National Scenic Byway, they will discover a diversity of recreational, historic, cultural, natural and scenic travel opportunities.”

The Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center is located along the Sackets Harbor waterfront in the three-story, native limestone former Union Hotel built in 1817. The free admission will apply to daytime visits and evening programming at the Center.

Upcoming 6:30pm programs feature US Lacrosse Hall of Fame Coach Kirk Ventiquattro on Saturday, July 9 and Onondaga Nation lacrosse stickmaker, coach and retired professional lacrosse player Alfie Jacques on Saturday, July 16.

Now retired from 12 years of successful competition, Joann provides educational horsemanship applicable to any equine discipline through mounted-police style Obstacle Clinics , workshops, lectures, demonstrations and lessons presented by Gentle Dove Farm, Bloomfield, NY.

Joann’s 11am Tuesday, Aug. 9 Equine Center Round Pen demonstration will demonstrate the mounted police style of creating the horse-rider bond using basic obstacles. At 2pm, she and her mount will demonstrate a series of more difficult obstacles that exhibit the ultimate trust.

Building block training methods to accustom a horse to multiple obstacle and sensory experiences will be introduced in both of Joann’s seminars.

“Dave Minteer could be called Western New York’s ‘Horse Whisperer,’” said Dr. Ann E. Dwyer in presenting Dave with the Genesee Valley Equine Clinic Equine Educator of the Year Award in 2010. Minteer has studied horsemanship with John Lyons and applies Lyon’s Natural Horsemanship methods. Minteer, who trains at Wild Side Ranch in Blooomfield, NY, is especially known for his patience and success with difficult horses. The Wednesday, August 10 Round Pen Seminars at 11am and 2pm with the former rodeo rider, Cornell-trained farrier and professional horse trainer will show various techniques for developing horse-rider trust and confidence.

Minteer says, “Horses learn by the release of pressure, thereby being rewarded for the correct response. The objective is to make the horse feel calm and safe throughout the training.”

Elizabeth “Liz” Hodge-Nier is a certified Richard Shrake “Resistance Free” horse trainer. She trains horses, riders and 4-H equine club members out of Durand’s East Edge Ranch in Clayton, NY. She earned her Equine Science and Management degree specializing in Training at SUNY Morrisville, and trains in English and Western style disciplines for pleasure and competition. She holds clinics and judges open horse shows.

On Thursday, August 11, Liz will offer an 11am Round Pen seminar focusing on developing confidence and comfort for both horse and rider. In her 2pm seminar, she will present ways to “talk” with your horse to develop a strong communication relationship.
