Daughters Continue Walk/Run in Memory of Father

(Dewitt, NY – Aug. 2011) Clad in t-shirts emblazoned with a silhouetted runner holding up two victory fingers, three sisters will participate again in the walk/run they started last year in memory of their father, Jerry Barsha.

Sisters Amy, Cindy and Janice Barsha, will join their mother, Martha, in the 5k walk/run, “They Can’t Stop Me!” which will be held Sept. 24 at the Erie Canal in DeWitt. Participants who raise $100 will receive a “They Can’t Stop Me!” baseball cap. There will also be raffles for various items and a reception/party with music after the event.

Proceeds from the charity will benefit a Jerry Barsha Memorial Scholarship at Onondaga County Community College where he worked for many years. Barsha died in September 2009. He was 83.

The race is a way for the Barsha sisters to honor their father and gather people together, something that brought great happiness to his life.

“My father had a pride and passion for people and the community and getting people together,” Amy Barsha said. “This is a way to continue to honor him.

Debra, of Katonah, will be walking in the event, along with her mother, Martha, of DeWitt, Jerry’s wife of 51 years.

Sisters Janice, of Boston, Cindy, of Miami, Fla, and Amy, of Fayetteville, will participate in the run.

Gerald “Jerry” Barsha was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1948 with a dual degree in radio broadcasting and political science.

Gifted with charisma and a courageous edge for news, he spent 32 years of reporting on Central New York radio and television, breaking many exclusive stories and conducting his share of news investigations.

He received accolades for his work, including the Syracuse Press Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 and an award for 35 years as a teacher at Onondaga Community College.

After he retired, he still maintained a busy lifestyle, spending winters in Florida with his wife, Martha, even after he was diagnosed with cancer, which he beat twice.

“He refused to let it stand in the way of anything in his life,” Amy Barsha said.

His endearing communication to his daughters after several complicated surgeries was proof there was no keeping him down.

“We would walk into the room not knowing quite what to expect and there he would be holding up his two victory fingers saying, ‘they can’t stop me,’” Amy Barsha fondly recalls.

On race day, the family will gather in honor of Jerry, a man whose “they can’t stop me spirit” left a legacy of hope and determination to an entire community.

Wojcikiewicz Receives Award From Clarkson University

(July 2011) John Wojcikiewicz of Manlius, N.Y., a senior at Clarkson University majoring in Biology, received the following award(s) at the University Recognition Day ceremony during the spring semester:

Department of Biology Outstanding Research Award: This award is given to the senior biology student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to the development of the biological sciences at Clarkson. Cartwright will receive a monetary award and have her name engraved upon a plaque that is on display in the Department of Biology.

Wendl named to Dean’s List at Villanova University

Andrew Wendl from Manlius, NY has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2011 spring semester in Villanova University’s College of Engineering (Villanova, Pa.).

Every year, Villanova University students with established outstanding academic records are honored by the dean of each college. To qualify for the Dean’s List in the College of Engineering, one must be a matriculated full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of 3.25.

Green Lakes State Park Announces Public Astronomy Program

(Fayetteville, NY – July 2011) On Friday July 22 Green Lakes State Park Public Programming presents Bob Piekel’s astronomy program.

Come view the night skies through large telescopes. Sights for the night include views of the planet Saturn, views of the southern Milky Way’s star clusters and nebulae, meteors from the southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower, and later in the evening the rising of the planet Neptune.

If cloudy or raining the program will be on Saturday July 23.

Green Lakes State Park Presents Story Time in the Old Administration Building

(Fayetteville, NY – July 2011) Green Lakes State Park, in conjunction with the Manlius Library will kick off the 2011 summer season with a story time hour.

Housed in the historic Old Administration Building, the program will occur the first Thursday of every month (July 7 to Aug. 4) and is designed for 3-5 year olds. The event will take place from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. The program will include nature themed stories, snacks, and games. Bring a cushion if you’d like to sit on the floor, if not chairs are available as well!

This event is free and open to the public, with park entrance fee beginning at 9:00 am.

Community Foundation Awards $587,427 in Community Grants

(Syracuse, NY – June 21, 2011) The Central New York Community Foundation awarded $587,427 in grants to 18 charitable organizations in Onondaga and Madison Counties from its unrestricted and field‑of‑interest funds.

Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum received $5,000 to complete a Cultural Landscape Report that will serve as a business plan for the management of the historic site. This will help the preservation, restoration, and reconstruction of the historic industrial complex.

City of Syracuse received $50,000 from the Spanfelner Fund to develop the landscaping adjacent to the Creek Walk between the Inner Harbor and Onondaga Lake that will enhance recreation opportunities and improve storm water management.

Community Memorial Hospital of Hamilton, NY received $60,000 to replace a vital Endoscopic Video System used in performing surgeries.

Community Resources for Independent Seniors received $5,330 to develop a resource directory of senior services available in Madison County in order to extend the time that seniors can remain in their own homes. This project was partially funded by the Carriage House Fund.

Crouse Health Hospital received $45,000 to implement a nurse-led diabetes clinic for patients transitioning from hospital to home. The program will provide the care, education, and testing necessary for patients to better self-manage their disease.

Fayetteville-Manlius A Better Chance received $2,800 to support technology upgrades including the purchase of a computer and donor tracking software, which will enhance the organization’s development.

Home Aides of CNY received $25,000 from the John M. & Mary L. Gallinger Fund to automate record keeping, allowing health aides to improve response time and the handling of complex cases for home care services. This project was partially funded by the Carriage House Fund.

Junior Achievement of CNY received $30,000 to support its work with the Syracuse City School District’s Naviance Program. With this grant, they will address the current high drop-out rate through identifying at-risk students and connecting them at the junior-high and high school levels to real-world business experiences.

Learning Disabilities Association of CNY received $14,000 to purchase iPads and applications that will be used during Learning without Borders, an academically-based summer program for teens.

Madison County Literacy Coalition received $50,000 to hire an Executive Director and to support the continuing work of the coalition by launching an Imagination Library pilot program.

On Point for College received $22,192 to enhance a program that re-enrolls college “stop-outs” who paused their education by helping them find new pathways to complete a post-secondary credential.

Onondaga Community College Foundation received $100,000 to support the new SRC arena and physical education building on campus. The addition of a local arena would serve both students and community members through new and existing health and physical education courses.

ProLiteracy Worldwide received $100,000 to equip the new Colvin Center on the Near Westside for local literacy programming. This center will be a resource to local residents and programs, as well as a national learning lab to advance adult literacy research, practice, and professional development.

Sarah House received $4,000 to renovate the kitchen in their facility, which provides lodging for the families and loved ones of individuals receiving medical treatment in nearby hospitals.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, located in Cazenovia, NY, received $15,000 to renovate an indoor gallery. The renovation will permit the park to keep the indoor gallery open year round, to better preserve art exhibits, and to provide a more comfortable atmosphere for its visitors.

Syracuse Stories received $17,349 to support a film documenting the first Syracuse Stories festival, a program that captures the struggles, achievements, contributions, and hopes of diverse members of the community as they tell their stories thru the arts. A portion of this grant was provided by the Dorothy R. Shoudy Fund to include sign language interpretation at the festival.

Tully Central School District received $16,756 from the William D. Barnet Memorial Scholarship Fund to pilot an e-reader program for high school students in collaboration with the LaFayette, Fabius-Pompey and DeRuyter school districts. This program will allow students to have access to the electronic equivalent of a backpack full of books, dictionary, thesaurus and reference sheets for every subject.

Vera House, Inc. received $25,000 to renovate the emergency shelter’s kitchen to enhance accessibility and the ease of use for residents.

The Central New York Community Foundation has served Central New York for over 80 years, receiving, managing and distributing charitable funds for the benefit of nonprofit organizations. Grants are awarded for programs in the areas of human services, arts and culture, education, environment, health, economic development and civic affairs. 25th Anniversary Law Enforcement Torch Run Enters Highways of Central New York

(Central New York – June 2011) For the 25th consecutive year, the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run will pass through the highways of Central New York.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run features officers and athletes from agencies within the Central New York area, carrying the Flame of Hope to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics New York Summer Games, which will be held in Utica on June 10 and 11.

The cauldron will be lit promptly at 8pm on Friday, June 10 by retired New York State Trooper Arthur Ellis at Utica College Gaetano Stadium.

The Torch Run is the largest grass roots fundraiser for Special Olympics New York, which serves supports the year round training and athletic competition of more than 51,000 athletes in 22 sports, the Young Athletes Program, and the Motor Activities Training Program. All programs and events are free to athletes and there is no admission charge for the general public.

The Torch Run, which is organized and run by law enforcement officers from across the state, has historically raised more than $5 million in support of Special Olympics athletes. The partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics has created an everlasting bond that is based on mutual respect and admiration. In support of athletes, law enforcement officers are willing to run long distances in scorching heat and in driving rain, plunge into freezing cold lakes, wait tables for tips at area restaurants, pull fire trucks and even rappel from the top of extremely tall buildings.

The Flame of Hope began its journey in May, and has journeyed through all regions of the state. The 25^th Anniversary Central Region Torch Run will cross through Central New York streets (primarily on NY Route 5) on June 8 through June 10. Runners will be formally escorted by local police agencies as well as Rural/Metro ambulance throughout the route.

The general public, business owners, and general supporters of the Special Olympics movement are invited to line the streets as the Flame of Hope passes by.

Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community. From a backyard summer camp for people with intellectual disabilities to a global movement, Special Olympics has been using the power of sports to help athletes change their lives for more than 40 years.
