Professor, Liverpool Resident Spends Summer Volunteering in Kenya, Lebanon

(Morrisville, NY – Aug. 11, 2011) Morrisville State College professor Dr. Christopher Scalzo took his vast entrepreneurial expertise overseas this summer to help several companies in Kenya and Lebanon.

The associate professor of business and entrepreneurship first traveled to Kenya, East Africa, for three weeks to continue his efforts in helping a soy and maize producing company enhance its operations.

Scalzo, of Liverpool, traveled to Kenya through the Farmer-to-Farmer Organization as part of CNFA, (originally the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs), a private, nonprofit organization which strives to produce sustainable growth and reduce poverty by nurturing entrepreneurship.

During his three-week trip, Scalzo assisted Soy Afric, Limited, a company located in an industrial area in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital with an accounting system upgrade. Last summer, he helped them redesign the plant layout, assess their production flow and implement a new accounting system.

While he was in Kenya, he was also asked to give a seminar on entrepreneurship and presentations on business law, business research methods and accounting and financial analysis at Africa Nazarene University.

“It was an honor to teach in another country at the graduate level,” Scalzo said.

Scalzo also traveled to Lebanon for three weeks through the Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (ACDI/VOCA) to help several companies in the organic food industry create a business model and conduct financial analysis.

ACDI/VOCA is a private, international development nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C, which promotes economic opportunities for cooperatives, enterprises and communities through the innovative application of sound business practice.

Scalzo returned with ideas he will implement in the classroom to help his students gain a better understanding of business models.

This was Scalzo’s first volunteer effort in Lebanon and his second trip to Africa. Three years ago, he spent part of his summer helping dairy farmers in Honduras, where he was recognized with a President’s Volunteer Service Award, a prestigious national honor which lauds volunteer service.

Scalzo is a member of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE), an organization dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship.

Barry Darling Exhibition Opens at Imagine

Cadmium Winter

(Skaneateles, NY – July 2011) Paintings by Tully artist and educator Barry Darling will be featured throughout the month of August at Imagine, the fine arts and fine craft gallery at 38 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles.

The exhibition opens Aug. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., as part of the village’s First Friday celebration. Refreshments will be provided, along with entertainment by the Pond Creek Bogstompers.

Darling, who was director of the Department of Art at Henninger High School for almost 30 years, has been an adjunct assistant professor of art at Le Moyne College since 1990.

In addition to one-man shows locally at the Everson Museum of Art, Eureka Gallery and Le Moyne College’s Wilson Gallery, he has had exhibitions at the Castle Gallery in New Rochelle, Fenton Moore Fine Arts in Buffalo, and Waxlander/Khadoure and Adieb Khadoure Fine Art in Santa Fe, N.M.

Darling’s recent work involves acrylic color, acrylic medium on canvas and paper, and random use of ink transfers and acrylic pastes.

“Ultimately, I am intrigued by the impact of the image, and secondly by an inferred story or ‘view’ from the contemplative act of manipulating familiar colors and images, and hopefully discovering a little somethin’ along the way,” he says. “It’s the small revelation that keeps me involved. There’s an excitement in standing aside and letting things happen.”

Imagine is located in the lakeside village of Skaneateles, nestled in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York. It represents artists from across the country and Canada, along with many Central New York artists, to create one of the most diverse contemporary art collections in the area.

The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Larry Poons ‘VELOCITY’ Exhibition at Sam & Adele Golden Gallery

SAGGGalleryPoons

(Columbus, NY, July 15, 2011) VELOCITY is an exhibition of selected works by New York painter Larry Poons, opening with a reception for the artist from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Friday Aug. 19, at The Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (The SAGG) at Golden Artist Colors, Inc., 188 Bell Road, New Berlin. The exhibition continues through Nov. 19, 2011.

The long walls and unimpeded views at The SAGG have allowed for several of Poons’s large-scale works to be included in the exhibition.  VELOCITY features paintings created between 1975 and 2009.

Poons has exhibited his paintings around the world in museums and commercial galleries for more than five decades.  During his long painting experience, Poons has been unafraid to engage issues of monumental scale and vigorous paint applications for his expressive purpose.  He has undergone stylistic transformations that turned away from identifiable signature painting methods and plunged directly into radically different approaches to satisfy his own needs for forward motion.

The SAGG is proud to bring these works to the Golden Artist Colors’ campus to affirm Larry Poons’s long and influential career as a painter.  Poons is represented in New York City by the Danese Gallery and by the Loretta Howard Gallery.  A catalog of

the VELOCITY exhibition will be available, featuring an essay entitled, “Larry Poons: Five Decades” by critic Karen Wilkin.  To view VELOCITY online and to learn more about the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (SAGG), go to www.thesagg.org.

Happening the same weekend, will be the preview of the new artist in residence space.  In 2008 the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation began its commitment to providing living and workspace opportunities for artists, with the development of an artist in residence space in a hundred year old barn, just a 5 minute walk from the Golden Artist Colors’ facility.

Additional details about the Golden Foundation Residency can be found at www.goldenfoundation.org.  For more information about Golden Artist Colors, go to www.goldenpaints.com.

Her extensive study includes work at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, the Hartford Conservatory, Nikolais Louis Dance Theatre, Second City, Howard Fine Studios and Trinity College, where she earned the President’s Fellowship Award in Theatre and Dance.
