(Herkimer County, NY – Dec. 13, 2010) Herkimer County Office for the Aging would like to notify all HEAP recipients who have a contract with their oil company that they need to check their bills to ensure that the company is not overcharging them. It has been brought to our attention that some oil companies are charging people more per gallon than the agreement calls for when the client receives HEAP; this is illegal and in violation of their vendor agreement. Herkimer County HealthNet Announces Incentive Awards for Herkimer County Municipalities
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 16, 2011) Herkimer County municipalities can apply for Incentive Awards from Herkimer County HealthNet to support the efforts of the Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play grant initiative funded by the New York State Department of Health.
Herkimer County HealthNet is offering four-$5,000 awards to be used for municipal projects that promote physical activity, access to outdoor recreational facilities, areas that support bicycling and walking, and safety in areas where persons are or could be physically active. Projects that qualify should take place between the dates of April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012.
The Creating Healthy Places grant’s purpose is to assist communities with infrastructure improvements that will decrease rates of childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes by increasing opportunities for physical activity for Herkimer County residents.
Recommended municipal improvement strategies and measures to help communities tackle the problem of obesity through environmental change and policies that promote physical activity include but are not limited to:
* Sidewalks and Sidewalk Improvements
*Lighting (promoting safety for pedestrians/cyclists)
*Signage (promoting pedestrian/bicycle safety)
*Crosswalks and Crosswalk Devices
*Bridge Construction (friendly for pedestrians/cyclists)
*Highway Improvements (friendly for pedestrians/cyclists)
*Parking Areas and Parking Area Improvements to promote pedestrian safety (adjacent to sidewalks, bicycle routes, trails and trail heads)
The deadline for submitting the grant applications is Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.

Herkimer College Announces Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 15, 2011) Herkimer County Community College will hold Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend September 29-October 1 on the Herkimer campus. A variety of events are scheduled. The community is welcome to attend.
Thursday, September 29 at 1 p.m. the Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series will present the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet in concert in the Sarkus-Busch Theater of the McLaughlin College Center. The Quintet is comprised of students from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. The concert is free of charge.
The Athletic Hall of Fame Inaugural Induction Ceremony & Reception will be held Friday, September 30 at 5 p.m. For reservations, contact the Foundation Office at shepardta@herkimer.edu or (315) 866-0300, ext. 8459.
Events on Saturday, October 1 begin at 11 a.m. with a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk (registration begins at 10 a.m. in the physical education building). Congressman Marc Butler is the honorary chairperson for this event, which benefits the American Cancer Society.
From noon-4 p.m. events will include faculty lectures; a motorcycle, antique tractor & car show; DJ; geocaching on the nature trail; solar star gazing; inflatable games and novelties; swimming in the Cristman Pool and historic walking tours of downtown Herkimer.
An international food event and barbecue for alumni teams will be held from noon-2 p.m. Afternoon activities also include horse drawn wagon rides, Frisbee golf, volleyball and bocce ball.
The film “A Place in the Sun” will be screened at 2 p.m. Car show awards will be at 3 p.m. followed by mentalist Robert Channing at 4 p.m.
Athletic events include the 4th annual men’s baseball alumni game at 11 a.m., women’s soccer vs. Niagara at 1 p.m., the 2nd annual alumni softball game at 2 p.m. and men’s soccer vs. Mercer at 3 p.m.
The events conclude with a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. by Gridley Paige, “CNY ROCK ICONS—80’s Rock and New Rock.”

Language Circles Offered Free
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 15, 2011) Herkimer County Community College’s Center for Global Learning will host Language Circles throughout the fall semester. A group of students from Venezuela, Mali and Morocco will meet with anyone interested in learning or improving their language skills in Spanish, French and Chinese.
Language Circles will meet on Mondays and Fridays from September 16 to December 9, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in the Center for Global Learning, located on the ground floor or the Library Building. Language Circles are open to the public and free of charge.
Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet to Perform
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 14, 2011) The Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet will perform Thursday afternoon, September 29 at Herkimer County Community College. The concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Sarkus-Busch Theater located in the McLaughlin College Center.
The Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet is an elite ensemble of students from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. Auditioned each year, the ensemble is endowed by Dr. Arthur Frakenpohl, Professor Emeritus and internationally known composer and arranger. The students receive scholarship support and funding for travel and other activities.
Their performance at HCCC will include selections by Bach, Debussy, Ellington, Lennon & McCartney, Joplin and more.
Members of the Quintet are Brianne Borden (trumpet), a sophomore music education and performance major at Crane; Tom Giosa (trumpet), a sophomore music education major; Marian Hotopp (horn), a sophomore studying both music education and performance; Shaun Cagney, also a sophomore music education and performance major; and Richie Cluxton (tuba), a senior majoring in music education and performance.
The concert, offered through The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series and presented by the Herkimer County College Foundation, is open to the public free of charge. The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series is the result of a generous endowment made by the late Robert H. Wood, a long-time resident of Ilion, NY. The Robert H. Mentalist to Perform at Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 15, 2011) Mentalist Robert Channing will be performing at Herkimer County Community College’s Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend. The amazing Channing is billed as “World’s Foremost Mind Reader, Hypnotist and Psychic Entertainer.” He will perform Saturday, October 1 at 4 p.m. in the Sarkus Busch Theater of the McLaughlin College Center.
The community is welcome to attend free of charge.
Channing’s show includes ESP, hypnosis, mind reading and psychic experiments. He’s performed on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX television. Channing’s show has been called “amazing, riveting and clean—with a perfect blend of comedy.”

Todd Promoted at Herkimer College
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 15, 2011) Herkimer County Community College has announced the recent promotion of Julie Todd, Herkimer, to the position of assistant director of human resources. Todd has served as the College’s human resource specialist for the past nine years.
HCCC President Ann Marie Murray said, “I am pleased Julie has accepted this promotion and am confident her professional experience, service skills and commitment to excellence will serve the needs of our College and workforce extremely well.”
Todd holds a B.S. from Utica College of Syracuse University and M.S. from Chapman University. Her duties as assistant director will include benefits administration for all employees.

Herkimer Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Planned
(Herkimer, NY – Sept. 13, 2011) Herkimer County Community College’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Reception will be held Friday, September 30 as part of the College’s Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend.
The College will honor five individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the College through intercollegiate athletics. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a strolling dinner and cash bar, induction ceremony at 6 p.m. followed by a social hour with dessert. The 2011 inaugural class includes: Thomas LaPuma, professor emeritus and former athletic director; John W. (Jack) Alofs, retired men’s basketball coach (posthumously awarded); Dwight Barnett ’06, men’s soccer; Sharon Gleasman-Howell ’79, multi-sport athlete; and Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie ’87, men’s lacrosse.
About the Inductees:
Thomas LaPuma, of Frankfort, was instrumental in developing the intercollegiate athletic program at HCCC as well as the physical education curriculum, fitness center, and intramural sport program. LaPuma was hired as an instructor of physical education in 1970 and retired as a professor emeritus in 2003. He served as director of athletics from 1974 to 1990. During his tenure, LaPuma coached men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s softball, men’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s baseball, men’s wrestling and men’s bowling. In 2001, he was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Involved in numerous professional organizations throughout his career, LaPuma was a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) from 1999-2009, and served as the sole USA representative for FISU sponsored world championships and world university games from 2001-2009. From 2005-2010, LaPuma served as vice-president for the men’s division of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
John W. (Jack) Alofs taught physical education and coached basketball at Herkimer from 1971 until his retirement in 1991. During his 20 years at Herkimer, Alofs achieved a 72 percent winning percentage with a record of 391-155. Highlights of his career included a fourth place finish in the National Junior College Division I basketball tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1987, and a Division III Junior College National Basketball Championship in 1991. Alofs was twice named New York State Junior College Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2005, Alofs published a book, “Jack Plus 5: Secrets, Strategies, Experiences and Fundamentals in Coaching Winning Basketball.” In his book, Alofs shared his coaching techniques and strategies, as well as many human interest stories about his experiences coaching high school and college basketball. Originally from Gloversville and a long-time resident of New Hartford, Alofs died on May 14, 2007 at the age of 70.
Dwight Barnett ’06, a native of Jamaica, NY, led the 2005 Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team to a national championship. While at Herkimer, Barnett was named two-time All Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year, two-time Region III Player of the Year, two-time NJCAA first team All-American, two-time NSCAA first team All-American, and NSCAA Division III Junior College National Player of the Year. After graduating from Herkimer, Barnett received an athletic scholarship to Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida where he led the Fighting Knights to two consecutive NCAA national tournament appearances and was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named a NSCAA third team All-American and a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine third team Academic All-American. Barnett went on to play for the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer League First Division, scored his first goal of his professional soccer career in the 83rd minute of a 2-1 victory over Miami FC. Barnett was the first men’s soccer player from HCCC to be drafted by Major League Soccer.
Sharon Gleasman-Howell ’79, of Ilion, excelled as a multi-sport athlete at Herkimer. Howell was a member of the 1978 and 1979 volleyball, basketball and women’s track teams. She competed in volleyball and track regionals and nationals, was named Most Valuable Player for track, Most Improved Player for volleyball, and was named to the regional all-star volleyball team. Howell was named All-American for track and held several records including the 100 meter, 200 meter, long jump, high jump, 400 meter relay, 800 meter relay and sprint medley relay. She was named HCCC’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1979 and was one of the first HCCC female athletes to receive a Division I scholarship. She earned a B.S. in physical education from the University of Rhode Island where she played volleyball and broke several track records, some of which still stand in the top 10 today. Howell also holds an M.S. from SUNY Cortland and is an associate professor and coach at HCCC.
Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie ’87, of Boston, MA, was a two-time NJCAA All-American lacrosse player and Team MVP while at Herkimer. Opie continued his education at Syracuse University where he played in two national championship games in 1984 and 1985 in which the Orange lost to John Hopkins University both years. He also played club lacrosse with the Long Island and Maryland Lacrosse Clubs and earned a World Championship with the Men’s National Lacrosse Team in Perth, Australia in 1990. Opie holds a Ph.D. in African American Studies from Syracuse University and is Visiting Associate Professor of African and African Diaspora History and Foodways at Babson College. He is author of Hog and Hominy: Soul Food from Africa to America (Columbia University Press, 2008), Black Labor Migration in Caribbean Guatemala, 1882-1923, Florida Work in the Americas Series (University of Florida Press, July 2009) and numerous journal articles on Latin American history and foodways.
Herkimer County Community College’s athletic program is a Division III member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and has amassed 32 national, 83 regional and 119 conference championships. Herkimer placed second in the 2010-11 National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup competition. HCCC has placed in the top five of the competition since its inception in 2004.
