Village of Solvay Summer Festival Starts with a Song, Ends with a Bang

(Solvay, NY – Aug. 2011) Strike up the band! The LaFayette Community Band will perform a free concert at the Solvay Public Library on Tuesday Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy their lively tunes with your whole family.

Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 3:30 p.m. enjoy the fun of Mike Carter’s “Magic & More” program. Free and open to the public at the library.

Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. Suzanne Masters will teach us henna body art and Mike Carter will do face painting “masks” here at the library. Free and open to public.

Thursday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. The Solvay Summer Festival kicks off with the Kiddie Parade. Kids march in costume (just like Halloween!) to Woods Road Field. LINE UP AT 5:30 p.m. at the Library. Every child gets a prize and there is no registration or costs to enter.

Just Desserts Art Guild Exhibits at Hazard Library

(Syracuse, NY – Aug. 2011) The Just Desserts Art Guild is exhibiting artwork at the Hazard Library, 1620 W. Genesee St. through the month of August.

The Just Desserts Art Guild formed as a portrait drawing group hosted by the late George Benedict. The group continues to gather for portrait drawing, as well as plein air painting and other artistic endeavors.

The exhibit commemorates the August birthday of Benedict, an inspiration to the group and a significant presence in the Central New York art world for many years.

Exhibiting artists include Judy Boynton, Kim Bunce, Maureen Barcza, Lisa Diglio, Mike Field, Ray Hepfner, Tom Hussey, Paul Mollon, Christine Patsos, Bob Pickett and Ross Simons.

Oneida Nation Foundation Donates $5,000 to Central Library to Bring Noted Author to Lecture Series

(Oneida, Syracuse, NY) The Oneida Nation Foundation recently contributed $5,000 to the Central Library in Syracuse. That contribution will be used to bring noted author Sherman Alexie to speak on March 27, 2012, at 7:30 pm, as part of the Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series that is presented by Friends of the Central Library.

Alexie is a highly acclaimed American Indian novelist, who has written many books, including Reservation Blues and The Toughest Indian in the World. He also wrote and produced the film, “Smoke Signals,” based on his book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.

Kids Explore the World in an Amazing Race

(Baldwinsville, NY – July 26, 2011) This year’s Summer Reading Program in public libraries features the One World, Many Stories theme. Each Monday, the Baldwinsville Public Library has been offering outstanding programs to encourage kids to explore the many stories available everywhere.

A recent Monday afternoon found 12 teams of explorers, grades 2-5, tearing around the library in a library version of The Amazing Race. All teams competed in 10 activities based on the 10 categories of the Dewey Decimal System. As they completed each task, they got their Reading Program passports stamped. The team of Michelle Elsmore and Elizabeth Roberts was the first to arrive at the finish line. Prizes were awarded to all participants.

Baldwinsville Public Library is a member of the Onondaga County Public Libraries, and is chartered to serve the residents of the Baldwinsville School District. More information on library services is available on their website, www.bville.lib.ny.us.

Assemblyman Sam Roberts: Legislation passes Assembly to help disadvantaged libraries in Central NY

(June 16, 2011) Assemblyman Sam Roberts (D,WF-Syracuse) announced the Assembly’s passage of legislation he sponsored providing libraries in economically disadvantaged areas with additional funding needed to ensure a safe and viable learning space for Central New York children and communities (A.113-A).

“Our communities gain enormous, long-term benefits when we invest in our libraries,” said Roberts. “In addition to being a place for people to borrow books and movies, libraries play a pivotal role in helping provide individuals with free access to the internet along with vital tools for seeking employment.”

Communities eligible to apply for the increased grant funding are those areas that have over 15 percent of their populations living below the poverty line based on the previous census. Also, areas whose public school system has 65 percent or more of their student enrollment eligible for free or reduced lunches under the National School Lunch Program would be eligible for the grant increase.

“I am very thrilled that the New York State Assembly is making good progress on amending the public library construction grant program to make it more inclusive of all New York State libraries,” Elizabeth Dailey, Executive Director for Onondaga County Public Library said. “The proposed guidelines which would allow libraries in economically disadvantaged communities to apply for a construction grants requiring a 25 percent funding match – rather than 50 percent – would open new possibilities for improvements in library services.”

The bill would allow the state to grant up to 75 percent of the total cost requested by the libraries for construction and renovation costs, leaving the libraries to raise the other 25 percent. Previously the state would provide 50 percent of the renovation and construction money to libraries, while the library would be responsible for raising the other 50 percent.

Village of Solvay Addresses Stormwater Concerns

(Solvay, NY – May 2011) On May 24th at Solvay Public Library, the Village of Solvay Board held a public hearing on stormwater management plans. Village Engineer Anthony DeStefano presented an overview of projects required to satisfy the New York State stormwater discharge permits.

Solvay has an aged sanitary sewer and drainage system that poses many challenges that this plan addresses. In 1897, the Village of Solvay bonded for $40,000 to finance a complete system of sanitary and storm sewers. These were tied into Solvay Process Companies pipes. Today, modern engineering and materials allow for improvements to this system. The village proximity to Onondaga Lake’s remediation projects allows them to build on those corrections to water control infrastructure.

The Village Engineer also submitted the Village Stormwater Plan report for public review at the library as well as brochures. Pamphlets about rain gardens and other property improvements are available, too.

The Solvay Public Library has heightened public awareness about stormwater issues with distribution of educational material. In 2009, Boy Scout Paul Harvey created a rain garden in front of the library for his Eagle project. “Solvay on the Lake” series of childrens’ science programs in 2010 were provided with funding secured by Senator John DeFrancisco.

Currently, a special book display about water issues and garden design is in the library. Stormwater run-off information is included in this library’s “Onondaga Lake and Solvay Information Clearinghouse” collection.

This is a recent collection of personal and physical landscape, blending people, places, and things— using color and black and white in the traditional film and digital media.

Mitch Tiegel started photographing his personal landscape when he was 8 years old. He soon graduated to more sophisticated equipment, specializing in wedding and environmental portrait photography and has been shooting and printing his own work even since.

“Japanese Reverie”

Japan has been so much on our minds and hearts in the past several weeks. We at Petit decided to put together an exhibit of Japanese art and artifacts from our staff and patrons. The bulk of the show is made up of 19^th and 20^th century woodblock prints and several beautiful kimonos.

Learn The Basics: Computer Skills You Need

Petit Branch is offering monthly hands-on computer training classes for adults who need to learn the basics. This month, instructor Blair Frodelius will teach you how to create documents in Microsoft Word. Each participant will have a computer to work on. The course is absolutely free, but limited to 5 participants, or you may bring your laptop.

Grow a Pizza Herb Garden

What makes pizza taste so great? Is it the crust, the sauce, or the gooey cheese? Yes to all! But it is also the seasoning. After listening to a story, children will have the opportunity to create a small Italian herb garden; just the thing for scrumptious homemade pizza.
