Living Healthy Workshop to be held in Little Falls

(Little Falls, NY – May 4, 2011) Herkimer County HealthNet and Little Falls Hospital invite anyone over 18 years of age, with a chronic condition or acting as a care-giver to someone with a chronic condition, to participate in an empowering program, The Living Healthy Workshop.

The Living Healthy Workshop will be offered free for six weeks starting Tuesday May 17 between 6 and 8 p.m. in Conference Room A on the 4th Floor of Little Falls Hospital, and running until June 21.

The Living Healthy Workshop is an opportunity for people with different chronic diseases and their care-givers to learn the skills needed in the day-to-day management of treatment and to maintain and/or increase life’s activities. The Program has been adopted by such groups as the National Health Service of England, the Diabetes Society of British Columbia in Canada, Kaiser Permanente, and Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. It has been used all over the world, following the training principles developed at Stanford University.

The Living Healthy Workshop is a workshop given two and a half hours, once a week, for six weeks. People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders.  The Herkimer County course is sponsored by Herkimer County HealthNet.  The trained leaders are Ms. Tia Lock, Health Educator at Herkimer HealthNet, and Adam Hutchinson, Executive Director of Herkimer County HealthNet.

Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments.

It is the process in which the program is taught that makes it effective. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives

Does the Program replace existing programs and treatments?

The Living Healthy Workshop does not conflict with existing programs or treatment. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education such as Better Breathers, cardiac rehabilitation, or diabetes instruction. In addition, many people have more than one chronic condition. The program is especially helpful for these people, as it gives them the skills to coordinate all the things needed to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives.

People, who took the Workshop, when compared to those who did not, demonstrated significant improvements in exercise, symptom management, communication with physicians, general health, health distress, fatigue, disability, and activities limitations. They also spent fewer days in the hospital, and there was also a trend toward fewer outpatient visits and hospitalizations. Many of these results persist for as long as three years.

To participate, contact Tia Lock at (315) 768-4108, or at lockwoodtiam@yahoo.com by Friday, May 13.

Participation is limited, so please register soon!

Little Falls Teen Joins East Coast Tour on Stage at Black Box Theater

(Little Falls, NY – Jan. 26, 2011) Step 3 Entertainment record label and production company announces the start of George Walsh’s “Back To Human” tour for 2011 promoting his latest CD entitled George Walsh -Back To Human.

Walsh, who was a first place winner in the MWR World Wide Battle of the Bands Competition will be following the release of this CD with a tour that will bring him from New York to the island of Jamaica.

This tour will be coming to the Black Box Theater at The Inn at Stone Mill April 1 at 8pm. Walsh will be donating a percentage of all CD sales for the entirety of the tour to The Human Rights Campaign. The CD will be available for purchase after the show with a meet and greet with the performers. Tickets will be $15 pre-ordered or $20 at the door.

Walsh will be joined by acoustic musician Ryan Cassata, a teenage artist well known nationally for his music and appearances on The Tyra Banks Show, Larry King Live and for writing the score for the award-winning independent short film Loop Planes. Ryan will be opening the show with a set of his original music.

Step 3 Entertainment and George Walsh both received a lot of media attention this past year with the release of a compilation CD entitled INDIGO. INDIGO was produced by Walsh under the Step 3 Entertainment record label, of which Walsh is the owner, to help raise money for The Trevor Project, a youth suicide telephone lifeline. The Trevor Project is actively supported by many Hollywood celebrities including Neil Patrick Harris and Daniel Radcliffe who plays the role of Harry Potter. The CD was named after a song Walsh wrote by the same name.

Walsh made a connection with Little Falls when he was searching for talent on the internet to put on the Indigo CD. Walsh found a Little Falls teen by the name of Craig Lyon who was distributed on the benefit CD and soon thereafter signed a record deal with Step 3 Entertainment and released his first CD. Lyon will be joining George on the stage during the concert to help perform the song “Indigo” with the help of Ryan Cassata as a finale to the show.
