Local Student Named to The College of Saint Rose Dean’s List for Spring 2011

The College of Saint Rose in Albany announced that the following local resident was among 774 students named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2011 semester:

Full-time students who complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and achieve a semester grade-point average of at least 3.5 with no grades of D, F, Incomplete or Pass/Fail are eligible for inclusion on the Dean’s List.

Manlius Pebble Hill Students Visit Sullivan

(Town of Sullivan, NY – July 2011) Divine Nature Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility on Pine Ridge Road in Sullivan welcomed students from the Manlius Pebble Hill School summer program recently. On July 14, 30 students ranging in age from 6 to 8 years old attended the educational program. The audience learned about wildlife and rehabilitation, preserving the environment and how they can help protect wildlife.

Mary Ellen Rose, president of Divine Nature and a wildlife rehabilitator, presented and explained about the raptors used as educational birds at the facility.

At the end of the program, students visited with and fed the animals at BMR Acres, also a part of the facility that helps support the wildlife rehabilitation.

Wojcikiewicz Receives Award From Clarkson University

(July 2011) John Wojcikiewicz of Manlius, N.Y., a senior at Clarkson University majoring in Biology, received the following award(s) at the University Recognition Day ceremony during the spring semester:

Department of Biology Outstanding Research Award: This award is given to the senior biology student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to the development of the biological sciences at Clarkson. Cartwright will receive a monetary award and have her name engraved upon a plaque that is on display in the Department of Biology.

Wendl named to Dean’s List at Villanova University

Andrew Wendl from Manlius, NY has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2011 spring semester in Villanova University’s College of Engineering (Villanova, Pa.).

Every year, Villanova University students with established outstanding academic records are honored by the dean of each college. To qualify for the Dean’s List in the College of Engineering, one must be a matriculated full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of 3.25.

 

Walsh Named to Dean’s List at Villanova University

Christopher Walsh from Manlius, NY has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2011 spring semester in the Villanova School of Business (Villanova, Pa.).

Every year, students with established outstanding academic records are honored by the dean of each college. To qualify for the Dean’s List in the Villanova School of Business, one must be a matriculated full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of 3.5, with no missing or non-passing grades.

 

Area residents named to Union College’s Dean’s List

The following local residents were among the 700 Union College students named to the Dean’s List:

Haritha Sishtla ’11, a resident of Manlius, NY; Sishtla is a Leadership in Medicine with a focus on Biology and Economics major and a 2007 graduate of Fayetteville-manlius High Sch.

Paul Tunison ’11, a resident of Syracuse, NY; Tunison is a Computer Science major and a 2007 graduate of West Genesee Senior HS.

To be named to the Dean’s List, Union students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the academic year and meet certain other requirements.

McKie Named to Dean’s List at Buffalo State College

Shayna McKie of Manlius has been named to the spring 2011 School of Arts and Humanities Dean’s List at Buffalo State College. Shayna is the daughter of Dave and Cathy McKie.

To qualify, students must earn a minimum term GPA of 3.5 and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.

 

Manlius Residents Earn Honors

Manlius Resident Receives Oswego Scholarship

OSWEGO, NY (07/13/2011)(readMedia) SUNY Oswego has awarded merit scholarships to more than 600 incoming students, including James W. Marlowe of Park Drive in Manlius. Marlowe received a $17,600 Presidential Scholarship. The award recognizes past academic achievement and potential for success.

He has reserved a place in the incoming freshman class for the fall semester. Classes will begin Aug. 29.

Outstanding first-year students entering Oswego are offered $17,600 Presidential Scholarships ($4,400 a year for up to four years), $5,000 Deans’ Awards ($1,250 a year for up to four years) or $2,000 Merit Awards ($500 a year for up to four years).

First-year students who have completed the strongest academic programs with the highest grade averages and standardized test scores are invited to become Presidential Scholars. Students receiving the $17,600 scholarships have average high school grade averages of 94 and average SAT scores of 1240.

The awards are part of more than $2.5 million in merit scholarship money offered at SUNY Oswego. These funds are in addition to the more than $66 million in need-based grants, loans and work-study awards that SUNY Oswego students receive annually.

Local Student Named To St. Lawrence University Dean’s List

CANTON, NY (06/28/2011)(readMedia)– The following student has been selected for inclusion on the Dean’s List for academic achievement during the spring 2011 semester at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.

To be eligible for the Dean’s List at St. Lawrence University, a student must have completed at least four semester units and have an academic average of 3.6 (based on a perfect 4.0 scale) for the semester.

Peter C. Papayanakos, of Manlius, Class of 2012. He is majoring in Environmental Studies/Government. Papayanakos graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse.

 

SUNY Potsdam Names Area Students to President’s List

POTSDAM, NY (06/29/2011)(readMedia)– The State University of New York at Potsdam recently honored students who excelled academically in the Spring 2011 semester, by naming 880 students to the President’s List. SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller honored the students for maintaining the high grades necessary to make the list.

To achieve the honor of being on the President’s List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours that semester with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

 

Pooler earns second academic honors from Clark University

WORCESTER, MA (06/30/2011)(readMedia)– Alexander J. Pooler of Manlius, NY has been named to second honors on the Clark University Dean’s List. This selection marks outstanding academic achievement during the Spring 2011 semester.

To be eligible for second honors, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, of a maximum of 4.3 (all A+s).

 

Green Lakes State Park Presents Story Time in the Old Administration Building

(Fayetteville, NY – July 2011) Green Lakes State Park, in conjunction with the Manlius Library will kick off the 2011 summer season with a story time hour.

Housed in the historic Old Administration Building, the program will occur the first Thursday of every month (July 7 to Aug. 4) and is designed for 3-5 year olds. The event will take place from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. The program will include nature themed stories, snacks, and games. Bring a cushion if you’d like to sit on the floor, if not chairs are available as well!

This event is free and open to the public, with park entrance fee beginning at 9:00 am.

Area Residents Earn Honors, Degrees

Local Students Receive Leadership Award

The following local high school student was awarded the 2011 Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience:

Alexis Eckert of Syracuse, a student at Charles W. Baker High School.

The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. Saint Michael’s, located in Burlington, Vermont, one of America’s top 10 college towns, was founded on the belief that serving others is part of its Catholic tradition, and through the award seeks to honor those who demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism.

Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country, are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations, taking leadership roles in these activities.

Winners were presented the book First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (HarperCollins 2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael’s College graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author.

Thomson Graduates from Denison University

Eric David Thomson of Manlius was among the 481 graduates awarded diplomas by President Dale T. Knobel at Denison University’s 170th commencement held May 15.

Thomson earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology. He was a recipient of the Denison Founders Scholarship. Thomson was named a summer scholar. He studied abroad with the University of Canterbury Program in New Zealand.

OXFORD, OH (06/23/2011)(readMedia)– Lindsey Elizabeth DuPell, of Manlius, NY was among 3,967 students from Miami University who received degrees during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 7 at Yager Stadium. DuPell received a B.A. in Architecture degree .

Area resident graduates from Cazenovia College

(June 2011) Cazenovia College honored its 186th graduating class on Saturday, May 14. Among the graduates was:

Lillian E. Zaplatynsky, of Manlius received a bachelor of science degree in human services, specializing in general human services.

 

Manlius resident graduates from Messiah College

(June 2011) Manlius resident Megan Robinson was one of 622 students to graduate from Messiah College on May 14 during the College’s annual commencement.

Robinson graduated magna cum laude with a degree in elementary education.

 

Hoyt of Manlius Named to Dean’s List

(June 2011) Alyssa M. Hoyt, of Manlius has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester at the University of Vermont. Hoyt is a junior Business Administration major in the School of Business Administration.

To be named to the dean’s lists, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.

 

Area residents graduate at Union College’s 217th Commencement

(June 2011) The following local residents were among the 520 Union College students to graduate June 12, 2011 during a ceremony on the College’s Hull Plaza:

Haritha Sishtla, a resident of Manlius received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Biology, Economics, and Medicine.

Paul Tunison, a resident of Syracuse received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Computer Science.

The speaker at the College’s Commencement was award-winning broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff, senior correspondent and co-anchor of “The PBS NewsHour.”
