Four North Country Women Taking Christmas to Dominican Republic in February

(Jefferson County, NY – Jan. 2011) Christmas may be over in the United States, but Operation Christmas Child is still carrying gifts to children in need around the world. In February, four Jefferson County women — Patty Jennings of Mannsville, Anna Woodkirk of Sackets Harbor, Deborah Mooney of Depauville, and Katie Brennan of Clayton — will help distribute Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes filled with small toys, school supplies and hygiene items to children in the Dominican Republic. Operation Christmas Child is an international giving mission of Samaritans’ Purse, the relief and evangelical organization led by Franklin Graham.

Jennings is the volunteer Area Coordinator for the New York North Central Area of Operation Christmas Child. The Area that includes Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Oneida and Herkimer counties saw a 27 percent increase in the number of shoe boxes donated. Those 10,216 boxes joined more than 5.5 million more from the U.S. and are now traveling around the world to reach children in areas of poverty, war, and other hardships in more than 100 countries. Worldwide the total of shoe box gifts given in 2010 was approximately 8.2 million.

Woodkirk is the pre-school children’s program director at New Life Christian Church, Watertown.

Mooney helped distribute Operation Christmas Child (OCC) boxes in Africa on a previous mission trip, and last year hiked the Appalachian Trail with her husband Patrick and along the way raised money for the OCC project.

Brennan is a college student who has donated shoe boxes for several years and volunteered with the new OCC Relay Center in Clayton this past November.

Approximately 8.2 million Operation Christmas Child boxes were given worldwide in 2010; with approximately 5.5 million of those donated by people in the U.S.

While in the Dominican Republic, the four North Country women will help distribute the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes and help with other ministry work based on the local needs.
