Nurses at Oswego Hospital ER Arrested for Stealing Controlled Substances

(Oswego, NY – Sept. 16, 2011) The New York State Police in Fulton, in conjunction with the New York State Department of Health – Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, have arrested three Registered Nurses from the Oswego Hospital within the last month:

On Aug. 16, Shannon M. Salva, 42, of 108 Meays Drive, Syracuse, NY

On Aug. 26, Lori E. Weinheimer, 46, of 1379 County Route 7, Oswego, NY

On Sept. 9, Ryan C. Fleming, 25, of 4070 State Route 69, Mexico, NY

All three nurses were each charged with first-degree Falsifying Business Records (E Felony), and seventh-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (A Misdemeanor) along with additional charges relating to the Public Health Law.

The charges stem from an internal investigation that was initiated by Administrators at the Oswego Hospital.  While on duty within the Emergency Department, the suspects were stealing controlled substances from an automated dispensing system, Omnicell, located within the Emergency Department.  Controlled substances were removed from the Omnicell without a valid physician’s order/prescription.

The Oswego Hospital was able to track the several unauthorized transactions over a period of time and identify the subjects that were responsible.

All three were released on appearance tickets, returnable to the City of Oswego Court.  Their employment status at Oswego Hospital is unknown.

 

Police Investigate Fatal House Fire in Mexico

(Mexico, NY – Sept. 8, 2011) The New York State Police investigated a fatal residential fire that occurred just after midnight at 57 Hamilton St. in Mexico.

The fire started in the garage area as gasoline fumes ignited when contacting a water tank pilot light. The resulting flames injured Peter Barnes, 41, who was working on an ATV at the time.

The fire quickly spread to the residence entrapping the other two occupants. George Barnes, 69, was pulled from the residence by two responding New York State Troopers and Peter Barnes.

Attempts to locate Shirley Barnes, 63, were unsuccessful and she died as a result of the fire, apparently due to smoke inhalation.

George Barnes was taken to Upstate Hospital in serious condition with smoke inhalation.  Peter Barnes was also taken to Upstate Hospital where he is in stable condition with upper body burns.

Mexico and New Haven Fire Departments responded to battle the blaze.

The investigation was conducted with The Oswego County Cause Origin Team.

The investigation continues, but the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

 

Hear Operation Christmas Child Speaker May 15 in North Mexico

(Mexico, NY – May 2011) On Sunday, May 15 the United Methodist Church of North Mexico is inviting area churches and interested individuals to attend its 9:30am service to hear guest speaker Operation Christmas Child Area Coordinator Patty Jennings.

All are welcome to attend the dynamic presentation designed to Inspire children, families, churches, groups, businesses and individuals to become involved with the ministry that delivers shoe boxes filled with small toys, school supplies and hygiene items to children in need around the world.

Jennings will share photographs from her mission trips she’s taken with the opportunity to help distribute Operation Christmas Child boxes children in Africa and Central and South America.

Operation Christmas Child is an outreach project of the international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org), headed by Franklin Graham. Jennings coordinates shoe box collections in Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, and Herkimer counties.

United Methodist Church of North Mexico, found off Route 3 north of the village of Mexico at 5 Kranz Road, partners with the Orwell United Methodist Church to collect Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.

More than 10,000 boxes were collected in Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, and Herkimer counties in 2010. The project distributed 8.18 million shoe boxes to more than 100 countries around the world last year.

Troopers investigate two vehicle serious personal injury accident

(Town of Volney, NY – Feb. 26, 2011) The New York State Police in Fulton investigated a two vehicle serious personal injury accident on Route 4 in the Town of Volney at approximately 1:15 p.m.

A vehicle operated by Jacob Burke, 18, of 814 Route 104B Mexico was westbound when it crossed the center roadway and slid sideways into the path of an eastbound vehicle operated by Holly Whiting, 65, of 1930 Route 4, Fulton. The passenger side of Burke’s vehicle collided with the front of the Whiting vehicle.

Burke was airlifted to Upstate Hospital in serious condition with head lacerations.  His passenger, Taylor Ostrander, 18, of 215 Bangall Road, Parish was also airlifted to Upstate Hospital in serious condition with back and possible internal injuries.

At this time it appears the injuries of both are not life threatening.

Whiting was transported to Upstate hospital via ambulance with a possible fractured arm.  Her passenger, Robert Brace, 8, of Route 3, Fulton was also transported via ambulance to Upstate Hospital with a chest contusion. Both of these injuries are considered to be minor.

All vehicle occupants were properly restrained by seatbelts.

The investigation is continuing with vehicle and traffic law charges pending.

 

Investigators Arrest Mexico Man for Criminally Negligent Homicide

(Pulaski, NY – Feb. 23, 2011) On Feb. 22 State Police in Pulaski arrested, 64 year-old, Lawrence J. Wilkinson, of 105 Larobardiere Road in Mexico, NY with Criminally Negligent Homicide (E-Felony) following a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Nov. 15, 2010 on Peter Scott Road, in the Town of Schroeppel.

Wilkinson left his 1978 Ford F-600 stake truck parked unattended partially in the northbound lane of Peter Scott Road while he was farming land adjacent to the road.  The vehicle was parked on a dark, unlit road without sufficient illuminating lights and/or reflectors, which would be visible to traffic.

Wilkinson’s vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2003 Toyota Tundra being operated by Eric A. Wilsey, 30. Wilsey was travelling north on Peter Scott Road with passenger Shawn M. Gronau, 17, when the accident occurred.

Gronau was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

Wilkinson was also issued vehicle and traffic tickets for his failure to utilize emergency lighting while parked and parking on a public highway without reflectors or signaling devices.

He was arraigned in the Town of Sandy Creek Court and released to appear in the Town of Schroeppel Court on March 9, 2011 at 7 p.m.

Headlights Illuminate Separate Drivers for DWAI Drugs

(Fulton, NY) On January 17, 2011shortly after midnight, Troopers out of Fulton arrested Mary C. Losurdo, 18, of 809 Route 35 Mexico, NY for DWAI – Drugs after a traffic stop in the City of Oswego.

Further investigation revealed that Losurdo was also in possession of a marijuana smoking pipe, a small amount of marihuana and a hypodermic needle.

Losurdo was charged with DWAI – Drugs , Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.

She was released with appearance tickets to appear in Oswego City Court on Feb. 3.

On January 17, 2011 at approximately 8:20 p.m., Troopers from Fulton observed a 2002 Chevrolet operating in the City of Fulton that failed to dim its high beam headlights for approaching traffic.

Investigation after the traffic stop revealed that Shawn M. Ashby, 30, of 10 West Genesee street in Baldwinsville was operating the vehicle while his ability was impaired by drugs. Ashby was also found in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Ashby was released with appearance tickets to appear in Fulton City Court on Jan. 27.
